You’ll see Dr. Alena Felkai’s friendly face and experience her charming personality at the VetPrac workshops. She has been with us for less than a year and is settling in nicely. When she’s not at the workshops or working at the clinic as a veterinarian, she’ll be blogging about our educators and support team!
Alena is no stranger to the medicine or the academic world, having a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc). She was once a Registered Nurse back in the day working in the medical/surgical paediatric ward, and she also worked with adults with mental health disorders (which we are sure has helped in her career from time to time). She then made the switch and pursued a career in veterinary medicine. Since then she has experienced a wide range including small animal, mixed practice, emergency, exotic and wildlife medicine. She was practising in Canada but lucky for us, she has made her way back to Australia and she is here to stay!
She certainly likes to live life on the edge and strongly believes “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”. No wonder she has her hands in all sorts of adventures. She is well travelled and has many different volunteer stories to share. Also, before leaving Canada she got heavily into outside rock climbing, ice climbing, and back country skiing…..Well Alena, you may need to take up a new sport because there isn’t much snow or ice in this neck of the woods.
Alena couldn’t be happier being a part of the VetPrac team and states “I have always loved learning, meeting new people and networking and I get to do it all with VetPrac! Even better, I get to help share the knowledge and witness colleagues learn new veterinary skills which is a big bonus. We have a strong team that are lovely to work with. Everyone is very supportive, respectful and understanding”.
Who knows where Dr. Felkai’s next adventure will take her, but the VetPrac team can’t wait to find out.
